After bringing alive on celluloid the sixteenth century epic romantic tale JodhaaAkbar, ace filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker goes even further back in time for his much-awaited magnum opus, Mohenjo Daro. Starring Hrithik Roshan (‘Sarman’) and Pooja Hegde (‘Chaani’) in the leading roles, Mohenjo Daro is a period adventure drama set during the Indus Valley Civilization, circa 2016 B.C. Prime Focus delivered Digital Intermediate (DI) Services for the 154 minute film.
At the outset, Prime Focus colorist Makarand Surte, Ashutosh Gowariker and DoP C.K. Muraleedharan went through a lot of different looks for the film. Works of different painters were referred to during the setting of the grade for the film, and the team eventually settled on three different colour palettes for three key phases during the film.
Lush greens were used to enhance the beauty of the village Sarman sets out from in search of Mohenjo Daro. The city of Mohenjo Daro itself was treated with hues of indigo and brown to achieve a warm earthy tone, whereas a wet and muddy look was designed to enhance the flood sequence during the climax of the film. In order to maintain the consistency while switching from the earthy tones to the soggy and drenched look, each frame was graded separately and then matched seamlessly with the rest of the shots. The grade was restrained to compliment the aesthetic appeal of the narrative, and the general look was kept very non-glossy and clean.
“The main challenge was to maintain a radiant skin tone for the lead characters, with bright sunshine and clear blue skies when the city itself had turned swampy and was engulfed in muddy water. We worked hard to create a balance between warm, desaturated surroundings and the sharp, bright atmosphere,” explained Prime Focus colorist Makarand Surte.“The film itself was extremely well shot; C.K. Muraleedharan’s eye for detail is exemplary, and this is reflected in every frame of the movie.”
Talking about his experience of working with Prime Focus, DoP C.K. Muraleedharan said, “I’ve had a very comfortable and long working relationship with Prime Focus. After 3 Idiots and P.K this is my third time working with Makarand, and yet again I am very pleased with the output we were delivered.”
In addition to DI, Prime Focus also supplied camera equipment for the movie, including Sony F65 Digital Motion Picture Cameras along with Angenieux Optimo Zoom lenses.
Produced under the banner of UTV Motion Pictures and Ashutosh Gowariker Productions Pvt. Ltd. (AGPPL), Mohenjo Daro is scheduled for worldwide release on 12 August 2016.
