Shah Rukh Khan plays the eponymous lead in his latest gangster film ‘Raees’, which chronicles the main character’s journey from precocious kid smuggling bottles of illegal liquor for bootleggers in exchange for money, to the reigning kingpin of the illegal alcohol empire in Gujarat. Shahrukh’s fiercely ambitious Raees meets his match in ACP Majmudar (Nawazuddin Siddiqui),the dogged police officer tasked with busting Raees’ illegal bootlegging business. What follows is an intriguing cycle of betrayal and revenge with each man trying to outdo the other. Prime Focus is proud to have provided Digital Intermediate (DI) services for the 142 minute film.
Director Rahul Dholakia and Mohanan scouted the shooting locations in Gujarat and later studied the images they had captured to determine the natural color composition of the environments, based on which they arrived at the principal color palette for the film. Shooting with a superstar like Shahrukh on real locations would have mounted a host of logistical challenges for the production team to overcome, so they decided instead to build sets in Mumbai modelled on the locales of Gujarat.
Prime Focus’ colorist Ashirwad Hadkar himself visited the sets quite often to gauge the exact color configuration of the location and environment. While shooting, Mohanan shared a lot of screen grabs from the footage with Ashirwad, including Arri Alexa LUTs, so that the desired color balance was clear. During post, Mohanan and Ashirwad fine-tuned the footage to arrive at the final grade.
The Digital Cinema Team at Prime Focus Ltd, mastered, distributed and released "Raees" overseas in 41 countries, across 6 languages in over 400 cinemas; apart from mastering the India final content for the various digital players across theatres.
