Prime Focus has delivered Digitial Intermediate (DI) services for Raman Raghav 2.0, which is produced by Phantom Films for distribution in India by Reliance Entertainment.
The film, based on the infamous serial killer Raman Raghav who operated in Mumbai during the mid-1960s, focuses on a copycat killer (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) who takes Raman Raghav as his inspirationand is driven by his strange obsession for a young cop named Raghavan (Vicky Kaushal).
A raw and suspenseful crime thriller, Raman Raghav 2.0 needed a gritty, visceral grade in order to have the impact director Anurag Kashyap and DoP Jay Oza wanted.
“Raman Raghav 2.0 is my first feature as a DoP, and after reading the script I was super excited to shoot this film,” said DoP Jay Oza.“In conversations during the prep, Anurag sir had mentioned to me that he wanted the film to look real, but to also have a surreal vibe. We shot the film in high contrast and really low light. Considering the nature of the script, we had already decided to keep it as grungy and real as possible, and we took liberty in designing and adding colors to enhance the characters, emotions and surroundings, so that the audience felt as close as possible to the feelings the characters are going through.”
The film was shot against a backdrop of the streets and slums of Mumbai, on real locations, and Prime Focus colourist Sunny Singh worked hard to create the dirty, dark picture of Bombay with a serial killer on rampage that Jay and Anurag required. The mixed lighting in the chawl sequences was emphasised to achieve an electric aura, which was further complimented by the brittle, metallic sound design. To favour the claustrophobic premise, a texture of grunge was added to make the frames look murky and visceral.
“Initially we decided on a dual treatment of the film, with a darker, lower lit version for foreign audiences and a slightly brighter version for the Indian release,” explained Prime Focus’ Colourist Sunny Singh, who worked for more than 100 hours to achieve the look for the film. “But upon its screening at the Cannes Film Festival and subsequent praise directed towards the look and feel of the film, the director decided to stick to the darker version.”
Complimenting the service he received at Prime Focus, DoP Jay Oza concluded, “Sunny and I have worked together in the past, and it has always been a great collaboration. I like my colorist to guide me through the process and give me advice, and another point of view on the shot footage. Sunny always has an interesting outlook and I enjoy the whole process of grading with him, where we both experiment… and luckily agree! We have similar visual aesthetics and that helps a lot and makes my work easier.”
Raman Raghav 2.0 premiered at the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight to a rousing reception, and was released nationwide on 24 June 2016.
