Prime Focus is proud to announce its collaboration with Director Tinu Suresh Desai and Producer Neeraj Pandey on the forth coming movie ‘Rustom’, for which Prime Focus provided digital intermediate services. Featuring Akshay Kumar and Ileana D'Cruz in the lead roles, ‘Rustom’ is based on the real life incident of Naval Officer K.M. Nanavati, who was tried for the murder of his wife's lover.
Keeping in mind the skin tone of the characters and the number of sequences shot inside a courtroom, a warm brownish treatment was decided on for the film. A desaturated look and consistent color separation created a periodic feel for most parts of the film while a tinge of green was added to distinguish the cruise sequences with a more exotic look. For the sequences shot in London, the colors were enhanced to emphasise the romantic scenes between the lead actors. While grading the outdoor naval sequences with clear blue skies and endless sea, the color tone was set to orange and breezy. The graded frames were then matched seamlessly to maintain a consistent look throughout the movie.
"The idea was to capture the Bombay of the late 50s era, so our main effort was focused on creating a look that compliments the story line of the film whilst bringing out the realism of the visuals," said Colorist Nilesh Sawant, who has previously worked on films such as ‘Special 26’, ‘Holiday’ & ‘Rowdy Rathore’. "A very desaturated look was maintained for most of the sequences based in Bombay while a lot of brown was utilized to grade the courtroom sequences.”
“We were careful not to accentuate the colors too much, because I believe that too much colorcan distract the audience from the original narrative,” said DoP Santosh Thundiyil. “During the production we divided the sequences based on their location and setting and assigned them their individual color families, and the art direction and costumes were also designed keeping that in mind. This technique helped us a lot to arrive at the desired look for the film.”
Talking about his experience of working with Prime Focus, Santosh added, “This is my 10th project with Prime Focus and over the years it has been my most preferred post-production studio in Mumbai. With ‘Rustom’ too, the end result is mind blowing and it is always a great experience working with Nilesh and the Prime Focus DI team."
In addition to DI, Prime Focus’ equipment rental division also provided the primary Arri Alexa XT cameras for the shoot.
Produced by acclaimed film maker Neeraj Pandey under the banner of Plan C Studios and Zee Studios, Rustom is scheduled for a world wide release on 12 August 2016.
